Review: The Creator (film)

The Creator is a sci-fi film about a possible future where AI is not only outlawed in America, but we Americans go to war with any country that harbors AI. We create this giant orbital space station called NOMAD that can drop nukes anywhere on Earth with impunity. And we do!

The AIs are split into two different “races”, robots and simulants, which are human-looking robots. The McGuffin of the story is someone called Nirmata, who has supposedly created a weapon to destroy NOMAD.

Within this backdrop is Taylor, a former undercover operative who is charged with finding Nirmata. Like is typical of these kind of stories, he “goes native” and ends up overcoming prejudice to create a better world. The weapon that Nirmata created is actually a simulant, who he names Alfie. He forms a close bond and much of the film is about developing his relationship to Alfie.

The plot is a little bit hard to follow and tries to do too much, but you don’t have to pay attention too closely. It’s also a bit long. I think they could have cut off like 20 mins and it would have been the same film only shorter. The special effects are actually great. I was really impressed. The set piece battles are a strong part of the film and I give big credit to the cinematographer as well. Some scenes near the end of the film are just fantastic.
